codeina(1) User Commands codeina(1)NAMEcodeina - Codec Installer
SYNOPSIScodeina [--help] [--interface=ui] [--no-update] [--sleep=seconds]
[--update] [match_string]
DESCRIPTIONcodeina functions as a codec installer for GStreamer-based media appli‐
cations, and informs the user about the value of free and open media
formats. By default, it will connect to the Fluendo webstore to help
the user download and install non-free media plugins.
Users can run codeina directly to view a list of all available plugins
available. The user is then stepped through the process of choosing
plugins for download, and installing these plugins.
Also, codeina will run automatically when a user tries to play media in
any GStreamer-based program if no GStreamer codec plugin is available
to play the media. In this case, codeina will check if a plugin sup‐
porting this media format is available for download. If so, the user
is likewise presented with a dialog that steps the user through the
process of downloading and installing the needed plugin.
Some plugins are available for no charge and other plugins may require
paying a fee to download and use. If it is necessary to purchase the
plugin, codeina will step the user through the purchasing process via
credit card or PayPal via a secure HTTPS web connection. Refer to
http://www.fluendo.com/ for more information about Fluendo.
OPTIONS--help Display program usage.
--interface=ui Specify the ui style codeina should use. The
value "gtk" can be used for a GTK+ based GUI
display, or "text" can be used for a text-based
display suitable for terminal programs.
--no-update Do not update list of available plugins.
--sleep=seconds Specify the number of seconds codeina should
sleep before starting. This is typically used
when launching codeina with session startup to
give the user session some time to start before
launching codeina.
--update Show available plugin updates, and do not run
the installer.
OPERANDS
The following operands are supported:
match_string
When specified, codeina will only display products that match the
specified match_string. Typically GStreamer-based programs call
codeina with a match_string when the user is wanting to play a file
in a particular format that is not currently supported. Then,
codeina can step the user through the process of downloading and
installing the codec plugin.
The syntax of match_string is as follows:
'gstreamer|<major.minor>|<application>|<description>|<caps>'
The <major.minor> value corresponds to the major and minor version
number of GStreamer installed on the system. The <application>
value corresponds to the name of the application searching for a
plugin. The <description> value is a description of the media for‐
mat that is being searched for. The <caps> value corresponds to
the GStreamer CAPS string associated with the format.
For example, the match_string could look as follows:
'gstreamer|0.10|totem|MP3 Decoder|decoder-audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3'
'gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol source|urisource-mms'
'gstreamer|0.10|amarok|Dolby AC3 Decoder|decoder-audio/x-ac3'
ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
See environ(5) for descriptions of environment variables.
CODEINA_DEBUG
Display debug information if set. Codeina provides 5 levels of
debugging output. If unset or set CODEINA_DEBUG to 0, there is no
debug output. If set to 5, the most verbose level of debug output
is displayed.
FILES
/usr/bin/codeina Executable for codeina.
$HOME/.local/share/codeina Configuration files for codeina.
$HOME/.gstreamer-0.10/plugins Location where codeina will install
media plugins.
